Homeschool Curriculum Review - Math-U-See
Math is not the easiest subject to tackle for kids or their homeschooling parents. It could be the way that you are teaching the concepts. Maybe your child learns in a different way than the curriculum is set up to be taught. That poses an inherent problem for your child and the future of math learning for them. Instead, try Math-U-See and discover the difference.
Math uses numbers, all of them. After a while they may start to run together for your child. What if you could somehow make math a livelier concept? This can be done by engaging all the senses and making it an interesting subject to learn.
The basis of Math-U-See is to teach understanding of the math concepts and not just rote memorization. The success of the program is introducing and reinforcing what has been learned at each level through a multi-sensory approach. It can be used from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Even if your child is not in kindergarten, you can begin implementing the mastery-based system from this grade level going forward.
Homeschool Curriculum Review - Math-U-See - What is Offered
Math-U-See is a mastery-based program. This means that the student drives the progress. Children of all abilities and needs can succeed in this type of program. As they are ready to move on to new concepts, the program will progress. The important thing is that they understand what you are teaching them so that they can build on it in future years. The program has guidelines to let parents know when their child has mastered a particular level and is ready for new information.
From the kindergarten level,
math begins with the Primer materials. It offers an easy introduction into the
subject of math, teaching kids to write their numbers, how to count, math
symbols and some addition and subtraction. Skip counting is also introduced as
well as some basic word problems.
The material progresses from there to more advanced math in the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta material. In 2013, the beginning math series have been enhanced with more examples, teaching tips and additional tools for students like expanded activities.
When your child is ready to move on, secondary math begins with Pre-Algebra. Students are introduced to order of operations, negative numbers and other topics. The complexity of math concepts continues with Algebra 1, Stewardship (Biblical based teaching about finances), Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and Calculus.
All in all, there is enough math information for a well-rounded program throughout their complete learning experience. The program also uses manipulatives (visual aids) and a music CD to bring math to life for kids at every stage of the game.
Math is important to life. Giving your child a good foundation of understanding will set them for life.
